Infrared Spectra of Cooling Flow Galaxies

چکیده

We have taken K-band spectra covering 7 cooling flow clusters. The spectra show many of the 1-0S transitions of molecular Hydrogen, as well as some of the higher vibrational transitions, and some lines of ionized Hydrogen. The line ratios allow us to conclude that the rotational states of the first excited vibrational state are in approximate LTE, so that densities above 10 cm are likely, but there is evidence that the higher vibrational states are not in LTE. The lack of pressure balance between the molecular gas and the ionized components emphasizes the need for dynamic models of the gas. The ratios of the ionized to molecular lines are relatively constant but lower than from starburst regions, indicating that alternative heating mechanisms are necessary.

Molecular Hydrogen and Paschen-alpha Emission in Cooling Flow Galaxies

We present near-infrared spectra obtained to search for Paα and molecular hydrogen lines in edge-darkened (FR I-type) radio galaxies with bright Hα emission in the redshift range 0.0535 < z < 0.15. We find that all three galaxies in our sample (PKS 0745-191, PKS 1346+26, & PKS2322-12) which are associated with strong cooling flows also have strong Paα and H2 1–0 S(1) through S(5) emission, whil...

A Large Mass of H2 in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in Zwicky

We present the Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectrum of the infrared-luminous ( ) brightest 11 L p 4 # 10 L IR , cluster galaxy (BCG) in the X-ray–luminous cluster Zwicky 3146 (Z3146; ). The spectrum shows strong z p 0.29 aromatic emission features, indicating that the dominant source of the infrared luminosity is star formation. The most striking feature of the spectrum, however, is the exceptiona...

The Size of the Cooling Region of Hot Gas in Two Elliptical Galaxies

Some early-type galaxies show O VI emission, a tracer of gas at 10 K, and a predicted product of gas cooling from the X-ray emitting temperatures. We studied the spatial extent and velocity structure of this cooling gas by obtaining spectra of the O VI doublet in NGC 4636 and NGC 5846 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer . For NGC 4636, the central LWRS pointing shows that the O VI l...

Chandra Observation of the Cooling Flow Cluster

We present an analysis of the Chandra X-ray observation of A2052, including large-scale properties of the cluster as well as the central region, which includes the bright radio source 3C 317. We present temperature and abundance profiles using both projected and deprojected spectral analyses. The cluster shows the cooling flow signatures of excess surface brightness above a -model at the cluste...

X-ray Spectral Properties of the Cluster Abell 2029

We have analyzed ASCA and ROSAT PSPC spectra and images of the galaxy cluster Abell 2029. The ASCA spectra of the cluster indicate that the gas temperature declines with radius. The PSPC image shows that the cluster is very regular and smooth. Also, there is no significant evidence for any irregularities in the temperature distribution in the cluster, as would be produced by a subcluster merger...
